Pacemaker

An implanted pacemaker is a small device that is implanted under the skin and sends electrical signals to start or regulate a slow heartbeat. An implanted pacemaker may be used to stimulate the heartbeat if the heart's natural pacemaker (the sinoatrial, or SA, node) is not functioning properly, has developed an abnormally slow heart rate or rhythm, or if the electrical pathways are blocked. Internal Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

ICDs are used to reset the heart rhythm back to normal. However, a defibrillation system does not cure or prevent the arrhythmia. Instead, the system stops the arrhythmia and stores information for the doctor to evaluate later. A defibrillator is inserted into the patient's heart and chest to send out a small amount of electricity when needed to jolt heart rhythm back to normal. If you like to learn more about ICDs please click here.

With several Cardiologists and Cardiovascular Surgeons specialized in the insertion of ICDs and Pacemakers, nearly 300 insertions and battery replacements were performed at St. Edward Mercy in 2006.
